Pŷr privacy policy
Effective October 26, 2026
No account, no ads, no analytics, and no server of ours. Your lessons and notes stay on your phone (and in your own Android backup, if it's on). Your questions go only to the services needed to answer them: the AI model you connect; Wikipedia, Europe PMC and arXiv (and, for language lessons, Wiktionary and Tatoeba); and, if you add your own key for web search, Tavily. Your voice, in language lessons, never leaves your phone.
Who we are
Pŷr is made by Metis Aegis LLC, Washington, USA. This policy took effect on October 26, 2026.
What leaves your phone, and where it goes
- To the AI service you connect (for example Google Gemini, OpenRouter, or your own server): the topic or question you type, your optional guess, the source passages the app found, your quiz and exam answers so they can be graded, and, in a Pŷr Pro class, your answers to its starting questions and check-ins. Your API key is sent to that service to sign in. That service's own terms and privacy policy govern what it does with this data. For example, Google may use free-tier Gemini traffic to improve its products.
- To Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation), Europe PMC (EMBL-EBI) and arXiv (Cornell University): short search queries made from your topic or question, to find source passages. For a language lesson (Pŷr Pro), also to Wiktionary (Wikimedia Foundation) and Tatoeba (Tatoeba Association): short search queries, to find dictionary entries and example sentences.
- Only if you choose the open speech models: Pŷr downloads them once from GitHub (the sherpa-onnx project's releases), which sees an ordinary download request. Nothing of yours is sent.
- Only if you add a Tavily key for web search: the question you type in Search goes to Tavily, with your key, to find web pages. Lessons never use it. Tavily's own terms and privacy policy govern what it does with this data.
- To Google Play: if you buy the lifetime unlock or subscribe to Pŷr Pro, Google Play handles the payment and the subscription. Pŷr only learns whether the unlock is bought and whether a subscription is active, and never sees your payment details.
- If you report content: the reason, your note, the reported text (for quiz and exam feedback, that includes your answers), the topic, the model's name and the app version go to Metis Aegis LLC through a Google Form, so we can review it. If the form can't be reached, your email app sends the report instead, which also shares your email address.
- Pictures in a lesson or search load from Wikimedia's servers and, for web images in a search with your Tavily key, from the sites that host them. Each sees an ordinary image request from your phone, as a browser would.
- When you open a source, it opens in your browser.
All of this travels over encrypted (https) connections.
What stays on your phone
Your lessons, searches, citation checks, quizzes, seeds, exams and classes, in the app's private storage. Your notes (Pŷr Pro), which are never sent anywhere: not to the AI model, and not to us. Your settings, including your model address, API key and web search key. A log of the tutor's conversation decisions (see below). The calculator and periodic table work entirely on your phone. The teaching level you choose, saved with each lesson it was used for.
Microphone and speech
In a language lesson, "Say it" uses the microphone only after you allow it and only while you're saying a phrase. Your voice is turned into text on your phone, by Android's on-device speech recognition or by the open models you downloaded, and compared with the phrase. The recording is never saved and never sent anywhere: not to the AI model, and not to us. "Hear it" makes speech on your phone the same way.
Backups
If Android backup is on for your Google account, Android may back up your lessons, searches, seeds, exams, classes and notes to that account so they come back on a new phone. Settings and your keys are never backed up. You control backup in your phone's settings.
What we collect
Nothing in the normal course of using Pŷr: no analytics, no crash reports, no advertising identifiers, no account. The only thing Metis Aegis LLC ever receives is a content report you choose to send.
Deleting your data
Delete any lesson or search inside the app; its notes go with it, and clearing a note's text deletes that note. Uninstalling Pŷr deletes everything it stored on your phone; a copy in your Android backup stays under your Google account's backup settings, where you can turn it off or delete it. Anything you sent to an AI service or to Tavily is held under that service's terms; delete it there. We keep reports only as long as we need to review them, and delete them within 12 months; to have yours deleted sooner, ask us at the contact below.
When the AI can end a conversation
The AI model you connect can gently redirect, warn, and end a lesson's, search's, class's or exam's conversation: after a warning if abuse aimed at it continues, or straight away if it's called a particular slur for AI. It never ends a conversation with someone who seems to be in distress. Each of its decisions, with a short reason and the time, is logged only on your phone (the latest 300); that log is never backed up and never sent to us. A note the tutor writes to you, and whether a lesson's conversation ended, are saved with that lesson, so they're included wherever your lessons are (including your Android backup, if it's on).
Children
Pŷr is made for adults, and is not directed at children under 13. Its teaching level setting lets a parent or teacher have lessons explained at a school grade, to teach them or to learn alongside a student.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear in the app and at the same web address, with a new date.
