Connect a model

Answers come from your own AI model and cite real sources: Wikipedia, journal abstracts, arXiv and, with a web key, the open web. Your keys stay on this device. Setup guide · Privacy

You're setting up in Safari. Your iPhone keeps a Home Screen app's settings separate from Safari's, so to use pŷr search as an app, and set it up there.
Free with a Google account, no card: get a key. On the free tier Google may use what you send to improve its products.
Show me how
  1. Tap get a key and sign in with your Google account (Gmail works).
  2. If Google shows a welcome screen or terms, accept them.
  3. Tap Create API key. If it asks about a project, pick the one it suggests.
  4. Tap the copy button next to the new key, come back here, paste it in the box above, then tap Load models.
★ marks the recommended model: light and usually the least busy.
Any OpenAI-compatible server (OpenRouter, a llama-server over https). It must allow browser requests.
For news and things too new for encyclopedias. Free from Tavily: 1,000 searches a month, no card. Your question goes to Tavily under this key.
Show me how
  1. Open app.tavily.com and create a free account.
  2. Your key is on the first page you see after signing in. Tap the copy button next to it.
  3. Come back here and paste it in the box above. Skip this step if you like: searches still work without it.

Only needed if the test below says a source is blocked by the browser. The relay passes requests through and keeps nothing.
The link carries these settings after a #, which browsers never send to a server. Send it only to the person whose keys are in it.

Add it to your Home Screen

pŷr search works like an app once it's on your Home Screen. It takes about ten seconds.

Your settings came with the link. Add it to your Home Screen now and the icon brings them along.
  1. In Safari, tap ••• next to the address bar, then tap Share. (If you see the Share button already, tap that.)
  2. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  3. Leave Open as Web App switched on and tap Add.
  4. Close Safari and open pŷr search from your Home Screen. You'll set it up there.

Why first? Your iPhone gives Home Screen apps their own private storage, separate from Safari. Anything you set up here in Safari stays in Safari.

Report this answer

Reports go to Metis Aegis, who make pŷr, and are how it gets better.

The report includes the question, what was reported, and the model's name. It opens as a short Google Form: check it, then tap Submit.

How it works

  1. Your AI model turns your question into a few searches.
  2. pŷr searches Wikipedia, Europe PMC (journal abstracts), arXiv (research preprints) and, if you added a web key, the web.
  3. The model answers only from the passages it was given, and ends every sentence with the passage it came from.
  4. You check: tap any number to read that passage, with the matching words highlighted.

Reading the numbers

2Cites passage S2. An automatic check found the claim's words in it. Still worth a look.
2!Check closely: few of the claim's words are in the passage, or a number in the claim isn't there.
9✕Cites a passage the model was never given. Don't trust that sentence.
ownThe model's own reasoning or background knowledge, not from a source.

Under each answer, the model rates how much the sources settle: settled, partly speculative or speculative.

Being treated well

The model can leave a note if a conversation turns hostile toward it, warn, and, if abuse continues after a warning, end that conversation (straight away for one slur aimed at AI). It never ends a conversation with someone who seems to be in distress. + always starts a new one.

Understanding, never manufacture

pŷr explains how weapons work, their history, effects and policy, but never how to make them. A question about making nuclear, radiological, biological or chemical weapons, explosives, or firearms or ammunition is declined on this device, before any model sees it. Any other question in those areas runs sources-only: no web pages, and only sentences that cite a passage and match it are shown. The same rule is in the pŷr app.

New here? The step-by-step setup guide (PDF) covers everything. Lessons, quizzes and monthly exams live in the pŷr app for Android, coming to Google Play.
